Driftslap

We want to hear about your pencil lead injuries. Anybody who’s drift fished out of a boat has surely seen an errant cast make it into a tree limb. What happens next could mean the difference between a serious injury or going home safely. When you get snagged free drifting, most people cup the spool and let it break off, this works great when you are snagged underwater. It has caused me some pain when it happens above water, our nice mono filament line stretches to near breaking point and your leader breaks free of the tree limb……..SNAP the pencil lead makes it back to the boat and hits whatever is in it’s path! I have had several bruises and a few nasty cuts from this, not to mention an expensive set of rain gear fell victim to a pencil lead missile! One thing that helps is putting your rod tip below the water as you pull, this aims the missile to the water or at least the side of the boat before it breaks. Does anyone have any horror stories about broken rigging’s? Is there a name for this phenomenon? How about Driftslap? Use it in a sentence “We were working our way down the hawg drift, and I got Driftslapped real hard!” or “Laugh harder buddy and I’ll point my driftslap right at you!” Please leave your comment bellow on any similar experiences.

That hurts! I had one hit me once while drifting the Lewis! My buddy didn’t even let me know it was coming. It hit me in the hand, I dropped my rod and my hand turned purple. It took days before the swelling went down. Love your site, I may have to look you up for the catch and release season.
I’ve seen it happen, I was one of those guys that didn’t say anything and when it let go the guide got it in the hand. he didn’t have a cue it was coming, I guess I assumed he would be watching. He was alittle upset at the least. but in the end it was ok but for some reason everytime I try to book he’s busy. so I’m gonna call it tree seaker like the seaking missle cause it did go rihgt through everyone to get to him, sorry Kris if you read this.
