Forty incher

Let’s go fishing! Native Steelhead are showing up with good numbers, being caught daily. The Skagit is running a little low, and is running pretty clear as well. The fish that are in the river right now are seeking out areas with lots of cover. Deep pools and shallow riffles are good bets. Still no official word on the Catch and Release season this year, but the numbers are good right now. The angling pressure is getting higher by the day. That’s a good thing this time of year, it’s great to see some of the familiar faces, who don’t go do battle during the hatchery season. The Skagit can be a who’s who in the Steelhead world this time of the year. Pay attention and you will see some pretty noteworthy faces along the bank and in Boats. Let’s face it we don’t have the great numbers we used to, but just being a Skagit Steelheader this time of year puts you in some good company. Fly anglers from all over the country, or should I say world, have begun their annual pilgrimage to the river and let’s hope they have a reason to come in April. Fishing the Skagit in February isn’t about the number of fish you catch, it’s more of a rewarding challenge of man vs. fish. Some of my best days on the Skagit have ended up with no fish, but I left the launch feeling accomplished. The Skagit is a huge river and I know I did everything to the best of my abilities to catch fish. However as my good friend Curt Wilson always says “Every minute you don’t catch a fish, puts you one minute closer to your next one”. Every hour or even day I go without a fish, makes my Skagit experience a great one, when you pay your dues the 20 pounders will come!
